Coex achieves world's highest sustainability levels for EarthCheck Certified Silver convention centers
On September 16th, Coex Convention Center in Seoul announced that it has achieved Silver Certification from EarthCheck, the world's top travel and tourism-industry sustainability certification program. EarthCheck is owned by EC3 Global, an organization formed by the Australian government in 1997. The EarthCheck certification is used by over 1,100 travel and tourism organizations from 68 countries.
Among all EarthCheck-certified convention centers in the world, Coex Convention Center placed seventh, behind only the world’s leading environmental facilities such as Melbourne Convention Center, Sydney Convention Center, Bearns Expo, and Congress Center Leipzig. Coex also placed first among Silver-Certified centers, which are those that have been certified for less than five years, meaning that only Gold-level centers surpassed it in sustainable practices.
A Coex representative said, "The EarthCheck certification screened sustainability measurements, energy consumption efficiency, contributions to the local community, rate of use of environmentally-friendly materials, voluntary recycling rates, transportation options, and more for a total of over 100 items in 9 areas. Coex succeeded in reaching the highest levels of achievement in over 90% of the criteria."
Coex first received Bronze Benchmarking from EarthCheck just last year, in November of 2010.
