New Musical at the Coex Artium Draws K-pop Fans
The Coex Artium theater is hosting a new musical this fall called "Temptation of Wolves", based on an internet novel that became a domestic hit in the early 2000s. The novel was turned into a movie starring heartthrob Kang Dong Won, and the musical adaptation hit the stage for the first time on July 14th. The story involves a high school girl from the country moving to Seoul, and the love triangle that results when two popular boys begin to fight for her.
The performance is scored to adaptations of pop hits from the likes of chart-toppers 2PM and Girls' Generation, superstars who have exploded in popularity worldwide. The upbeat dance tunes serve to update the well-loved story as well as fully engage the audience with the show. One cast group even includes a popular member of star idol group Super Junior.
"Temptation of Wolves" is just one example of a medium riding the so-called Korean wave, a pop-culture phenomenon that is sweeping around the globe. Fans as far as Europe and South America have staged dance-inspired flash mobs this year, with groups of hundreds imitating Korean pop stars' dance moves in an attempt to convince Korean record labels to bring their singers abroad. Labels like SM Entertainment have obliged, selling out concerts to tens of thousands in Paris, Los Angeles, and Brazil.
"Temptation of Wolves", with its pop-music songs and star-studded cast, will be welcoming fans both local and international at the Coex Artium until October 30th, 2011.
