Coex, Korea’s premier destination for conventions, exhibitions and events since 1979, is set for a new facade facelift to its exterior as well as indoor spaces. The Korea International Trade Association (KITA) announced on March 14 that the British architectural firm Heatherwick Studio won the international design competition for spearheading the project, which is planned for completion by 2029.
The project aligns with major urban development plans in the surrounding Gangnam area, including the Gangnam International Transit Center (GITC) and Hyundai Global Business Center (GBC). With its new design, Coex aims to once again solidify its status as Korea’s landmark destination for the MICE industry.
Heatherwick Studio’s Design Concept
Heatherwick Studio’s design most notably features a dynamic modular facade with inspiration from “Cabinet of Curiosities,” also known as wonder-rooms. The structure will incorporate box-like modules, which will each serve as a unique multi-functional space for various MICE-related programs.
The jury panel—comprising nine experts from architecture, urban planning, exhibition space, and commercial facilities—evaluated competing designs based on creativity, integration with surrounding spaces, feasibility, and the overall design. Heatherwick Studio’s proposal was praised and ultimately selected for elegantly blending global architectural trends with an innovative urban concept befitting the Gangnam area.
Reaffirming Coex as a Cultural Landmark
The new Coex facade will not only be visually striking but will be designed as an open, welcoming space for all visitors. The redevelopment plan emphasizes:
- Comfortable, open areas for visitors to enjoy
- Dynamic, experience-driven spaces to enhance engagement during exhibitions and events
- Vibrant, lively architecture that reflects Coex’s role as a cultural and business landmark.
Jaehyung Je, Honorary Professor at Ajou University and chairman of the evaluation panel, stated, “This renovation will redefine Coex as an exciting space, recementing its position as a cultural landmark in Seoul.”
Coex in the Context of Global Architecture
Heatherwick Studio is renowned for designing world-class landmarks, including The Vessel in New York City and Azabudai Hills in Tokyo. The firm has also contributed to projects in South Korea, such as the Nodeul Island project in Seoul.
Jinsik Yoon, Chairman of KITA, emphasized the strategic importance of this redevelopment, stating, “With major transformations planned in the surrounding area, it is crucial for Coex to proactively embrace change. Coex is set to become a global landmark.”
Next Steps and Project Timeline
KITA will refine Heatherwick Studio’s winning design in collaboration with Junglim Architecture, the principal firm leading the Coex–GITC project.
Project roadmap:
- Finalize the design by mid-2026
- Secure permits and selection of construction company
- Complete exterior renovation by 2029
The project signals a bold new chapter for Coex reinforcing its role as the leader of Korea’s MICE industry.
